Very Successful Regional Director Retreat!!!

posted Jan 11, 2013, 7:11 PM by SCS Administration

Hello everyone,

I would like to thank all of you that participated in the SCS Regional Director Retreat, 2012-2013. I was very excited to see the level of engagement and commitment from all of you. I hope the information and resources provided was very helpful and useful. Please remember to share the information with your scholars or others you meet whether it be through the events/activities you host, on your campus, or just in a networking opportunity. Remember, NETWORKing goes beyond professional help or service, it can be social, emotional, financial; every relationship is purposeful and it is what you make it. I learned a lot myself and I could not be more proud to work with a group as amazing as you! I hope you all enjoyed our networking dinner at Roscoe's, too. Double mmmhs to those waffles! We will post pictures on the SCS facebook page as well as in the Scholar Monthly, so be sure to look out.

Please welcome new region, UC San Diego, and overseeing RDs, Richard Kizzee and Allan Cheng, to the SCS Regional Directors family. Thank you both for joining us and I look forward to working with you both in the near future. Please let me know if you have any questions on the training or documents I sent you two. Thanks again!

Also, here are the notes from the retreat, which I have also emailed all RDs. So for all whom were not able to make it out, you will have access to this information. We made folders for all regions, so for those whom were not represented at the retreat, please email me so we can make other arrangements. I will not send out the compiled RD Report for the past Fall semester/quarter until I receive all reports. The following regions need to submit their reports (and other documents if you have not done so already) by January 16th, 2013:

Cal Poly SLO
Franklin and Marshall
MIT
Stanford
USC

Special thanks to Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church for their continued service to South Central Scholars in letting us use the venue. Thanks to Stephanie Graham and Rickie, the chef, especially for the access. I would also like to thank SCS Staff, Amparo Diaz, Calvin Williams, and Mr. Winston, for your help in setting up the retreat, participating, and/or taking the lead on logistical and material/supply needs. This retreat was even more successful because of you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

MORE UPDATES about RD Retreat and Responsibilities!

posted Dec 26, 2012, 3:33 PM by SCS Administration

Hello Regional Directors,

I hope you all are having a very wonderful holiday and winter break. Thank you to all of you whom have confirmed your attendance to the RD Retreat tomorrow as well as those of you whom have informed me that you cannot make it. If you are a region whom have not confirmed or informed me of your absence, I am sorry, but you will have to wait until I send out notes sometime after the retreat. We cannot go over our budget (a very important rule in the nonprofit field). Please see below for more details on transportation and turning in important documents.

Confirm Transportation:

If you have stated that you need a ride to the retreat, Roscoe's, and/or home as well as your willingness to carpool, I have sent you a separate email to your personal emails (not the regions emails) with more updates and details. Please check your emails.

Submit Important Documents:

Thank you to all of you whom have already sent in your RD reports already! For the regions that are not attending the retreat, your report was due last Friday so if you haven't submitted it already, please do so ASAP. For the regions whom are attending the retreat, please remember that your reports are due today. If you have missed the 1pm deadline, please send them to me ASAP by no later than 5:00pm! Thank you. Also, please send in any RD documents (Event Activity Reports, Sign-In Sheets, Expense Reports, and Journal Logs) for the past fall semester/quarter by Monday, December 31st, 2012. If you have done this already, thank you!

I am very excited about the retreat tomorrow and I hope you all will find it enjoyable and useful during your time as a Regional Director. SCS is very grateful for your services. Have a great day!

Thank you to all of the regions that have confirmed their attendance and to those whom have let me know that they cannot attend. I have documented everything. If you will not be in attendance to the retreat, I do expect RD reports a little earlier, by Friday, December 21st, 2012. If you have not let me know your availability, please do so soon as I need to get an accurate account of all attendees to the retreat as well as to Roscoe’s for logistical purposes. Thanks!

The other deadlines are the same which transportation notification by December 20th, 2012 and RD reports (of regions attending retreat) due December 26th, 2012 by 1pm PST. It should not take no more than 10 minutes of your time to complete the report (if you have all of your documents, i.e. Event Activity Reports, Journal Log, etc., at hand). Remember that each region (except UCSD) will give a short 5-minute presentation on their region. It is not necessary to do a powerpoint or a video or any other hard copy format. If you would like to do something creative like this with pictures and so forth, please let me know ahead of time so that I can make sure any A/V needs are met at the retreat. It is a church so they may have the capability. Just make sure to notify me ahead of time.

If you are not on Chatter, you should sign up for a login at http://www.tfaforms.com/249257. Please join the Regional Directors group when you do obtain your login. Some of you have created Facebook groups for your region and that works too! You should definitely post pictures of your region and events if you can on the South Central Scholars group on Facebook. We want to highlight the amazing things you all are doing as Regional Directors in the SCS Scholar Monthly. Keep up the good work.

Please remember to send in all documents—Event Activity Reports, sign-in sheets, Expense Reports, and Journal Logs—before you go off on winter break. I know some have emailed Amparo and/or Meredith their event ideas and documents, but please send them to me as I am the one logging them into our system and in your files. Thanks so much again for all of your hard work and commitment to SCS. YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!!!

Regional Directors Retreat, 2012-2013

posted Nov 26, 2012, 3:16 PM by SCS Administration

Hello Regional Directors,

Thank you all for your commitment as a Regional Director for this school year. As promised, here are the updates of the Regional Director Retreat, 2012-2013. I have reviewed the doodle poll for everyone’s date and time availability and chose the one with the most hits. Thanks to all of you who filled out the doodle!

Date: Thursday, December 27th, 2012

Time: 10:00am-5:45pm (last two hours are reserved for optional Networking Dinner)

Location: Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

Transportation: If you may need transportation to and/or from the event, please let me know no later than Thursday, December 20th, 2012. I want to be sure everyone is accounted for. If you may be able to provide rides or carpools, please let me know as well.

Please see attached agenda for further details on the schedule. Please fill out the attached RD Report and email to me by 1:00pm on Wednesday, December 26th, 2012. The RD Report is like an evaluation of your region and yourself/ves as RD(s).

Each Regional Director will also present a short 5 minute report during the retreat (the attached RD report will help you) on the status of their region. Your five minute presentation should address:

-          Events you held

-          Contact you had with the scholars in your region

-          Positives and the negatives of you experienced in your region as a RD(s)

For regions with more than one RD attending the retreat, only one RD needs to present. This is where the documents that we gave you all come in handy. Again, there are no right and wrong answers. We just want to see how you are doing.

Please email Kyra Young at kyra@southcentralscholars.org if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. See you at the retreat!!!

Doodle for Regional Directors Retreat, 2012-2013

posted Oct 31, 2012, 4:44 PM by SCS Administration

Hello Regional Directors,

The purpose of the Annual RD Retreat is to bring together most, if not all, of the college/university regions of the South Central Scholars to discuss the betterment of the SCS Regional Directors program. This includes but are not limited to: coming up with ideas on engaging scholars not only with SCS but their colleges and each other; goal-setting and developing strategies/methods for implementing those ideas, and building leadership skills as well as establishing relationships between the RDs. In respect of the diversity of our regions, the retreat space is open to all perspectives, opinions and advice, as well as constructive criticism from the Regional Directors or RD representatives. It is for this reason that we really hope to have each region represented at the retreat.

I have created a Doodle poll to see what dates and times works best for everyone. There are 18 dates to choose from starting from the end of December going through the end of the January. The times are in grouped in an 8-hour time slots but do not worry as the last two hours are reserved for dinner/networking and are optional. The location is still TBD but I promise that it will be a good one that is spacious and interactive enough to the environment we want to create during the retreat. I have just graduated from UCLA this past June so I know that schedules can get very hectic, but please try to fill in the Doodle the best that you can (considering that you are being given more than two months worth of notice). Although the more the merrier, we only need one person to represent your region so if you cannot attend the retreat, please make sure that another scholar from your site to represent your region. You can access the Doodle at the link below:

The deadline to fill out this Doodle is November 16, 2012, a whole month from now. We want to begin arranging transportation, confirming the location, and other details for the retreat around that time. There will be a transportation notice sent out at the end of November with a deadline for a response in December for those of you who may need transportation. Again, this retreat is mandatory for the Regional Directors and we need at least one person to represent each region. Thank you all for your time and support. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please send them my way at kyra@southcentralscholars.org and I will do my best to respond.

Kind regards,

Kyra Young
